Landscape After Corot - First Leaves Near Nantes

This work and the drawing that follows were being worked on by my father when he passed away in August of 2007. Both were left unsigned and probably unfinished, leaning on the angled wall of our living room. Although unfinished, I think as they are both extremely fine works as they are. And when you consider how different they are, they are a great illustration of the dual nature of my father's work - on the one hand a deep reverence for the history of art and its traditions, as the Corot study shows. On the other hand, the 'Untitled' work that follows, which someone once called 'Angel of Death,' has that surreal, spooky quality that much of his work had. So for me these two late work, juxtaposed against each other, kind of encapsulate the psychic range of what my father explored in his art, to the end. - SL
