Here is a study from one of my father's sketchbooks where he drew the mannequin, or what he ended up calling the clown, in this painting.

The figure is taken, in isolation, from a painting by Francisco Goya called 'The Straw Mannequin', one of Goya's lighter works designed to be made into a tapestry.

As you can see my father's clown is much like Goya's mannequin, except my father made the man more upright, less tilted towards the left.
