The figure is taken, in isolation, from a painting by Francisco Goya called 'The Straw Mannequin', one of Goya's lighter works designed to be made into a tapestry.

As you can see my father's clown is much like Goya's mannequin, except my father made the man more upright, less tilted towards the left.
