Bathers to Giorgione to Cezanne to Manet

Bathers to Giorgione to Cezanne to Manet

This is one of the largest painting David ever did. I apologize for the low quality image. I hope to take a new photograph of the work in the near future.

It combines three works from the western canon, Giorgione's 'Tempest,' Cezanne's 'Bathers' from Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Monet's 'Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe.'

You can see in the preparatory exercise, David combined photocopies of the three works and arranged them to construct his composition.

Study for Bathers, photocopies taped to masonite.

He later drew grid lines over the study to help him size the image up for the final work on canvas.

David admired all of three of the artists, but I would have to say of the three, Cezanne had the most influence on his work. - SL
