Scraps of paper found recently show how David experimented with lots of different compositional ideas in the Moby Dick series. Some of these ideas were developed further with more drawings and a few would go on to become paintings.

If you look at the last image on the smaller strip on the top, you will see a composition that becomes the next drawing in this series of drawings.
