There is a precedent for having a dog in a Last Supper. Rubens did a version with a dog, but I'm not sure if David was aware of it.

The drawing below is clearly a sketch for the above work, but it also shares some elements with the smaller painting called "The Conjurer", which is the next painting on the website. The dog is here as in the work above, but like "The Conjurer" there is no table between the figures in the foreground and the man with his arms raised. Of all the Last Supper paintings this one perhaps best fits David's analogy of the biblical scene with a corporate boardroom meeting.
